Absolutley TERRIBLE!

Posted by EllenD on 5/30/2009

We're a BIG fan of NC BBQ, both eastern and western style and have eaten both at many restaurants... We chose RO's since their presence online and reviews from locals made us think this was an authentic BBQ restaurant, we could not have been more wrong about that!! First of all, some reviews rave about the burgers or hot dogs, good to know but my thinking is - IF YOU'RE GOING TO TOUT YOUR BBQ BY HAVING IT AS PART OF YOUR NAME....HAVE GOOD BBQ!!!! Now, on to the meal: We ordered the BBQ plate which came in a styrofoam container, supposedly enough to feed 2 people... Here's what we got - a pile of very dry, flavorless pork, cut up fine enough to be almost corn meal in consistancy. I would call it a paste if it had been at all moist, which it most definitely was not. A couple of packs of Bulls-Eye BBQ sauce (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? A BBQ restaurant that doesn't even make their own sauce??) Small handful of lifeless unremarkable fries, a few not-so-bad onion rings and hushpuppies (sad that this was the highlight of the meal) Small container of what seemed to be straight-out-of-the-can BBQ beans (Hope they didn't go through tooooooo much trouble for those) A couple of pretty dry, toasted buns, where we couldn't tell the top from the bottom Small container of some orange sauce stuff, was this the "slaw?" We thought it was some kind of dipping sauce for the fries or onion rings so we didn't put it on the BBQ, not that anything could've saved it anyway. Icea Tea - this was very good, but really, how can you mess up southern sweet tea? So seeing as how they offer dine-in, we decided to eat inside. Another review described it as "spartan" and I couldn't agree more, yet this is about the food, so I'm fine with the decor. BUT, I did get a look like I was from Mars when I asked for an extra plate so we could share the meal. They tried to give me another styrofoam container which was totally useless, if I had wanted to eat out of that, I could've used the one the meal came in. Again, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? They don't even have a paper plate for a meal that's supposedly made to be shared?? So all in all, I definitely won't be going back and would NOT recommend it if you're in the mood for BBQ.

Don't bother

Save your money and tastebuds by getting the slaw at one of the local grocery stores. Kyle Fletchers bbq on Hwy 74 E is the best in town.

Where's the sauce?

BBQ is very dry and very chopped up. Sauce comes in packets! What a joke. It's hard to believe these folks have been in business for 40+ years. I won't be back.

Stop by to buy some BBQ slaw/dip to go, then head for the door....

I have eaten barbeque from border to border in this state. I'm not an expert, but I do know good food when I find it. My family and I stopped by RO's on our way to see the Christmas lights at Mcadenville. I had heard good things about this place 'word of mouth', and wanted to try it. I was greatly disappointed. The facts: It took us thirty-five minutes to get our meal. I ordered the barbeque plate with the meat minced. I was shocked when I opened my 'Styrofoam' container to find a lump of dry meat chopped so fine, it looked like dust. The only way I could eat it was to mix in barbeque sauce, which is served in packets. My 1/4 cup of beans appeared to be fresh out the can and were cold -yes, cold. The hushpuppies, all three of them, had some flavor, but where stale and dry. The onion rings were actually decent, with a light batter and were hot -I got four. The fries were definitely a low grade -very thin, with no potato taste, and were overcooked in the deep fry. Finally, the bbq slaw/dip was pretty good. However, it is not really slaw, and I think it would shock some people. My mother had a cheeseburger, she said the meat was tasty, but was only lukewarm with the cheese un-melted on top. She scraped the bbq slaw off of her burger. My son had chicken tenders, he said they were flavorful and moist, but they were fried too long -almost burnt. My daughter had a corn dog which was almost burnt. She peeled off the bread, and ate the dog. And finally, when I went to ask for some extra bbq sauce 'packets' and honey mustard, the guys at the counter looked at me like I was committing a crime. Actually, I got the feeling they didn't want to hand it out for free. I try not to be hard on a restaurant if I get a bad meal, and I will definitely give one a second chance, but this was bad. In my case, almost everything served to my family was unacceptable. I wouldn't spend another $30.00 to give them a second chance. Thank you for taking time to read my review.

BEST SLAWBURGERS, HOTDOGS, AND BBQ ANY AND EVERYWHERE. CAN'T BE BEAT WITH A STICK.

The absolute best bbq, slaw, chili, sandwiches, hotdogs, WHATEVER! In my opinion, it's all the best you'll ever eat anywhere. For the people who think the bbq should be drowning in all of that sweet and yucky sauce, you'll be disappointed however, for us who have eaten it a very long time (60+ yrs for me) we have a choice of having some delicious, tender pork just plain on a bun, or we can ruin it by putting ketchup or whatever we want on it. I don't believe they ever advertised any kind of sauce for it, but the slaw made it a wet bbq for some folks. I just preferred the plain meat on a bun with a little mustard or a "slaw"burger. That slaw is out of this world good. I have tried to make it for years, but I've never been able to even come close. I can't duplicate the chili either. The carhops were always wonderful. Fast and eager to please. In those days they were just young boys. I haven't been able to go back for a few years now. Prior to meeting my future husband, I went there with my parents or my date, to eat every Friday or Saturday or any other day we could. I miss it so much. We live where we both retired 30 yrs ago and now are too old to be traveling much. We're both from Gastonia. Oh what I wouldn't give to be able to go back home and have a RO's or Black's Slawburger. When I'm up there, to visit family, etc I always go by there and buy a quart of the slaw and a quart of the chili. Please RO and Blacks, PLEASE, DON'T EVER CHANGE a thing about the BBQ, the slaw, the chili, livermush sandwiches, I can't even get livermush around here. Oh yes, I load up on it and also my favorite sausage, Neeses) I'll be back some day; my children will bring me if I can't make it on my own. In the meantime, if you could ship me some of it all, just let me know the cost. I'd be ever so grateful. PLEASE RO, SEND ME SOME SLAW AND CHILI AND PORK. I"LL PAY YOU.
